Bridging Copper and Fiber Networks
One of the main advantages of a media converter is its ability to connect two different transmission media. A switch with a copper Ethernet port of copper can be attached to the fiber network with a proper converter.
This is beneficial for situations where:
- Existing switches have copper Ethernet ports
- Fiber must be stretched between buildings.
- The distance between network equipment is great.
- Electromagnetic interference is a concern
- A fiber backbone must be connected to local Ethernet devices.
- An existing network needs gradual fiber expansion
